An SMF installation on a web server is called a forum. SMF itself is called forum software. Each SMF forum can have multiple categories, boards, and child boards.
Terminology may differ between forum software. What SMF calls a board, another forum software may call a forum or sub-forum, thus possibly creating some cross-referencing confusion.
