==How to Start Translating==

These translations are being done using a wiki extension called the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate Translate Extension], provided by the translatewiki team. You can start translating pages by clicking on the page title in the statistics page for your language as listed above. If you want to review pages that have already been fully translated, untick the box next to ''Suppress completely translated message groups'', which can be found at the top of the statistics page - then click on the button ''Show Statistics''.

A list of the translatable pages can also be found at [[Special:PageTranslation]]. If you have permission to translate, you will see on these pages a link titled ''Translate this page'' above the content of the page. This is another way of accessing the Translate Extension.

==How to translate these pages==
==Translating Links==
These translations will be done using a wiki extension called the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate Translate extension], provided by the translatewiki team. To begin, go to the base page to be translated. If you have permission to translate, you will see a link titled "Translate this page" before the content of the page. Follow the link to the Translate form. You'll see the page's name listed in "Group". Choose the language from the drop-down list, and hit the "Fetch" button.

You will see all the language strings which need to be translated. The translation tool calls them messages. The link for the language message is on the left, and the content is on the right. Click on the link to start an editing window for that message. Above the editing window, you will see the source text, labeled "Message definition".  In the textarea below, you may begin typing in the translation. If you wish, enter a Summary to discribe the changes you have made. When you have completed translating the language message, you must use the "Save page" button to save the language message you are editing on this page.
The standard method for creating Wikilinks doesn't work very well in the Translation Extension, so the '''llink''' template method is used instead.

For more information on translating, please see the [http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Translating:Page_translation_feature#Translators Page translation feature documentation] from the translatewiki team
*'''Linking to another wiki page:'''

'''Note about links translation''' - Unfortunately at the moment the only way to have translations not marked as outdated by the extension is to use the english form of the link (i.e. without any language code like en, it, fr, etc. at the end).
English version:<nowiki>{{llink|Main menu|text=Main menu}}</nowiki><br />
A "special case" that should be handled by the extension, but apparently is not, are intra-page anchors (e.g. <nowiki>[[#Pages Ready for Translation]]</nowiki>) in that cases the anchor must be translated, but the extension will outline the sentence containing it as outdated (see [[Search/la|this page]] to have an idea of the result). For the time being let's live with it, eventually we will find the cause and fix it.
Esperanto version:<nowiki>{{llink|Main menu|text=ĉefa menuo}}</nowiki>

===How to translate a template===
"Main menu" is the name of the original English version of the page. You should never translate this as the ''llink'' template will automatically redirect users to the translated version. You should however translate the part after '''text='''. In the example, the Esperanto translation "ĉefa menuo" has been entered.
In wikimedia a template is a special page that can be used within other pages to repeat consistently informations and/or structures (e.g. boxes like [[Template:Version specific]]). Templates can contain HTML, formatting entities, logical constructs and of course text. HTML, formatting and logical operators must not be translated, while text should be.

The translation of a template follows a different approach then the translation of a normal page.
*'''Linking to a certain section of another wiki page:'''

The first step is create a new sub-page of the template. The name of this sub-page must correspond to the code of the language you want to translate the template to (we will provide a list of codes as soon as possible, in the meantime you will find few links already created in each updated template). Once the sub-page is created the second step is copy the '''entire''' template to the sub-page. Then the last step is translate '''only''' the text that needs to be translated and keep everything else (markup, logical operators (e.g. #if, #ifeq, etc.) and so on) as it is.<br />Whenever possible the text in the templates will be marked with comments indicating the start (<nowiki><!-- start translate --></nowiki>) and the end (<nowiki><!-- stop translate --></nowiki>) points of each portion that can be translated.
English version: <nowiki>{{llink|Profile|anchor=Personal_Messaging|text=Personal Message Options}}</nowiki><br />
Dutch version: <nowiki>{{llink|Profile|anchor=Persoonlijke_berichten|text=Persoonlijke berichten opties}}</nowiki>

==Haven't these translations already been done for the old help tab==
Again, don't translate the English name of the original page ("Profile" in this case). But do translate the words after '''text=''', as these are the words that will appear in the link on the page. The '''anchor=''' marks the part of the Profile page that the link will lead to. The target of anchor= has to be changed in order to work correctly on the translated page. For example, in the case of the Dutch translation it has to be changed to '''anchor=Persoonlijke_berichten'''. You can discover what to enter after anchor= by going to the translated version of the page (in this case, ''Profile''), then click on the the translated title of ''Personal Messaging'' in the Table of Contents. You will then see the required text in the address bar of your browser, the part after the hash sign (#). For example, in the case of the Dutch version:
The old Help tab and the current text found here on the wiki came from the same source -- the old online documentation at http://docs.simplemachines.org/. So the new help files are very similar to the old help tab documentation. In some places, the information has been updated. This means you may be able to find translations in the old help tab or in the language files (or in the Language Editor, if you are an SMF LE translator). If the new wiki language message is still a good match to the old help tab string, you can copy and paste the the old translation into the wiki.

==Hey! What happened to the wiki translation I did earlier==
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Profile/nl#Persoonlijke_berichten
To those of you who tried out translation before we finished setting things up -- thank you. It helped us see how things were going to work. We apologize for all the confusing changes. Now that the wiki has moved out of beta, we will avoid making so many confusing changes in the future.

If you did some earlier translation on the wiki, and it no longer shows up, you can find it in the history. So if you worked on translating part of [[Registering/nl]] but don't see it now -- click the history button to find your older version of a page. If your earlier work in one browser window, and use the wiki translation tool in another browser window, you will be able to cut-and-paste your work into the appropriate language message.
Note that for languages which use certain special characters, the text after the above hash sign might have been automatically converted into a compatible format, which might seem a little confusing at first. For example, in the case of Esperanto, the above link appears as ''...#Privataj_mesa.C4.9Doj'' rather than ''...#Privataj_mesaĝoj''. Make sure that you use the converted form.
You can cut and paste your translations into the appropriate language http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/index.php?title=Registering/nl&action=history. As long as it is still a good match for the one of the current language "messages", you can just copy and paste it into the correct message.  Thanks for your help and your patience.

==Pages not yet ready for translation==
===Why Templates and How to Work with Them===
These pages already appear in the help tab. Each one requires some work. As each file becomes "stable", it will be released for translation.

==Some things site admins would like to do to make translation easier and better==
In the case of the Version Specific template it is used to create the coloured boxes that highlight version specific features. These boxes require quite a lot of code, so instead of pasting all this code into every page where it is needed, a template is used instead. This particular template is used on a page by adding:
We are in the early stages of translating pages on the wiki, so we are still learning about the best way to get everything set up, and about any problems that might arise. Please let us know if you run into difficulties, or need more information.

Here is our plan to get the wiki ready for translation:
<nowiki>{{ {{Localized|Version specific}}|small=yes|version=2.0|content=</nowiki><br /><nowiki>
# Make sure the translate extension is in place and working well. (good to go!)
Translate the text here.
# Make sure the pages are all in a final version and a "translator friendly" state (Some pages are ready now!)
}}</nowiki>
# Add information the translators need
#* How to find pages that need translation ([[Special:PageTranslation]])
#* Create our own local guide to translation, so we don't have to depend on the translatewiki.net teams documentation

==Tips and trick about translations==
In the above make sure that you translate only the part marked "Translate the text here". Leave everything else as it is and check that the final brackets are included after your translation because they close the box.
===Headlines, templates and line spacing===
Just noticed:
{{code|1=<nowiki>{{Other languages}}
{{TOCright}}
<translate><!--T:1-->
===View All Members===</nowiki>}}
will result in the headline no being properly displayed in translated pages (i.e. the triple equals doesn't get translated to a heading and remains as it is).
To solve the issue, please use an empty line between the last template and the translate tag:
{{code|1=<nowiki>{{Other languages}}
{{TOCright}}

<translate><!--T:1-->

This is the project page for translators of the SMF Wiki. Translators can check in here to find out what they can do. If you have any questions about this information, or suggestions for improving this page, please discuss in the Doc Helpers Board.

Languages to Translate

Below is a list of the 40 languages which SMF has been translated into. The links show the percentage of the Wiki translation completed in the Translation Extension for each language. This is the place to check to see what still needs to be translated (ignore the top two Mediawiki entries as they are for the Wiki interface). If the English text of these pages is modified, translations may need to be updated, so also please keep checking for updates from the Documentation Team in the Documentation Help board regarding changes to these pages. If the language you are interested in translating is not in the following list please notify the Doc Team by posting in the Documentation Help board.

How to Start Translating

These translations are being done using a wiki extension called the Translate Extension, provided by the translatewiki team. You can start translating pages by clicking on the page title in the statistics page for your language as listed above. If you want to review pages that have already been fully translated, untick the box next to Suppress completely translated message groups, which can be found at the top of the statistics page - then click on the button Show Statistics.

A list of the translatable pages can also be found at Special:PageTranslation. If you have permission to translate, you will see on these pages a link titled Translate this page above the content of the page. This is another way of accessing the Translate Extension.

Using the Translate Extension

  1. Make sure that the language you want to translate to is selected in the top right-hand corner. If it isn't, just click on that section and then search for your language.
  2. At the top of the page, you can select the page that you want to translate. If you click on All (next to Message Group), you will see a list of all the pages that are available in the Translate Extension.
  3. You can filter what is shown on the page by clicking on the links at the top of the page:
    • All - this shows all the translation units, including ones that have already been translated, as well as untranslated and outdated units.
    • Untranslated - Only the untranslated units will be shown.
    • Outdated - These units have been translated, but they now need updating.
    • Translated - Only translated units will be shown.
  4. At the bottom of the page, you can change the display of the Translate Extension:
    • List - Each translation unit is displayed in just one line. To see the full text of a unit, just click on it.
    • Page - This displays the full text of each translation unit.
    • Review - Select this in order to review and confirm each translated unit.
  5. Choose a unit to translate. Just click on a particular unit and enter the translation in the box below the source English text. When you have completed the translation of a unit (message), click on Save translation. If a translation already exists, you can make alterations by clicking on the edit icon to the right of each translation unit.

IMPORTANT:

  • When translating, you must always include all the Wiki code. For example, if you see ==Profile Information==, then make sure you include all the equal signs (==) as these indicate that it is a heading. For further information about wiki code, take a look at the Wikipedia Cheatsheet.
  • As you're translating a unit, please take note of any warning message above the input box. The Translate Extension may have found some inconsistencies in your translation compared to the English source version. In this case you must update the translation and save the changes.

Translating Links

The standard method for creating Wikilinks doesn't work very well in the Translation Extension, so the llink template method is used instead.

  • Linking to another wiki page:

English version:{{llink|Main menu|text=Main menu}}
Esperanto version:{{llink|Main menu|text=ĉefa menuo}}

"Main menu" is the name of the original English version of the page. You should never translate this as the llink template will automatically redirect users to the translated version. You should however translate the part after text=. In the example, the Esperanto translation "ĉefa menuo" has been entered.

  • Linking to a certain section of another wiki page:

English version: {{llink|Profile|anchor=Personal_Messaging|text=Personal Message Options}}
Dutch version: {{llink|Profile|anchor=Persoonlijke_berichten|text=Persoonlijke berichten opties}}

Again, don't translate the English name of the original page ("Profile" in this case). But do translate the words after text=, as these are the words that will appear in the link on the page. The anchor= marks the part of the Profile page that the link will lead to. The target of anchor= has to be changed in order to work correctly on the translated page. For example, in the case of the Dutch translation it has to be changed to anchor=Persoonlijke_berichten. You can discover what to enter after anchor= by going to the translated version of the page (in this case, Profile), then click on the the translated title of Personal Messaging in the Table of Contents. You will then see the required text in the address bar of your browser, the part after the hash sign (#). For example, in the case of the Dutch version:

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Profile/nl#Persoonlijke_berichten

Note that for languages which use certain special characters, the text after the above hash sign might have been automatically converted into a compatible format, which might seem a little confusing at first. For example, in the case of Esperanto, the above link appears as ...#Privataj_mesa.C4.9Doj rather than ...#Privataj_mesaĝoj. Make sure that you use the converted form.

Translating Templates

The instructions for translating a template should be found on the template itself. For example, take a look at Template:Version_specific (scroll down to the section "How to translate this template"). Be careful to follow the notes accurately and translate only the necessary parts. Don't alter any code or other text in the template because that will break it.

A list of the templates ready for translation can be found in the Category:Translatable templates

Why Templates and How to Work with Them

In the case of the Version Specific template it is used to create the coloured boxes that highlight version specific features. These boxes require quite a lot of code, so instead of pasting all this code into every page where it is needed, a template is used instead. This particular template is used on a page by adding:

{{ {{Localized|Version specific}}|small=yes|version=2.0|content=
Translate the text here. }}

In the above make sure that you translate only the part marked "Translate the text here". Leave everything else as it is and check that the final brackets are included after your translation because they close the box.

For further information about templates, please see the Wikimedia Quick Guide to Templates.
